Salsa Level 1

No previous dance (or salsa) experience required. Start this class at any time. Each class starts with an explanation and review of the basic Salsa step and the timing and rhythm of Salsa music, followed by a new beginner level turn. Learn the basics of proper technique and leading and following - all while having fun and meeting new people! No partner required. Everyone will rotate partners throughout the class.

Prerequisite: None

Recommended time to learn the Level 1 curriculum: 8-10 weeks. Your instructor must assess your suitability for entering Level 2.

Salsa Level 2

Geared to those who are comfortable with the basic Salsa step, basic right and left turns and Cross Body Lead. Build on Level 1 material and learn new turns and combinations, add footwork (i.e. Salsa shines) and reinforce your timing and partnering skills. Learn proper posture, frame, weight transfer and connection. Learn how to link steps into short turn patterns to look good on the dancefloor.

Prerequisite: Completed Level 1 at Steps Dance Studio and/or been assessed for entry in this level.

Recommended time to learn the Level 2 curriculum: 4 months. Your instructor must assess your suitability for entering Level 3.

Salsa Level 3

Cross body lead patterns, traveling turns, back breaks, checks and different hand hold variations will be linked into fun turn pattern combinations. Start developing a flow of motion between the moves that will make you feel good and look good on the dancefloor. As new steps and turn patterns are taught, the focus will be on timing, partner skills, connection, balance, improving muscle memory, and dancefloor etiquette.

Prerequisite: Completed Level 2 at Steps Dance Studio and/or been assessed for entry in this level.

Recommended time to learn the Level 3 curriculum: 5-6 months. Your instructor must assess your suitability for entering Level 4.

Salsa Level 4

This course will focus on high intermediate level turns and turn pattern combinations, how to maintain balance and connection with your partner while incorporating directional changes & intricate moves, improving musicality, how to remember shines and turn patterns and use them in different combinations, tips on how to be a better leader and follower, adding styling to your dancing - in short, how to be a more complete dancer!

Prerequisite: Completed Level 3 at Steps Dance Studio and/or been assessed for entry in this level.

Recommended time to learn the Level 4 curriculum: 6 - 9 months. Your instructor must assess your suitability for entering Level 5.

Salsa Level 5

Step up to the challenge! This course focuses on taking your dancing to the next level. Advanced level turn patterns, technique and skill development. Execute double spins, multiple turns and variations, intricate choreography, advanced level syncopations and sexy styling. Adapt and combine your moves to suit the level of your partner. Learn how to accent beats in the music, be more playful with the song and with your partner and express yourself through styling.

Prerequisite: Completed Level 4 at Steps Dance Studio and/or been assessed for entry in this level.

Recommended time to learn the Level 5 curriculum: Endless! We teach new turn patterns and variations every week!

 

Bachata Level 1

Bachata is a seductive and flirtatious dance that originated in the Dominican Republic and is played in all Salsa nightclubs. Learn the basic Bachata footwork and how to lead and follow some fun and simple Bachata turns and turn pattern combinations.

Prerequisite: None

Recommended time to learn the Bachata Level 1 curriculum: 8 - 10 weeks. Your instructor must assess your suitability for entering Bachata Level 2.

 

Bachata Level 2

If you have already learned the basic components of Bachata, now it is time to have fun! Learn new turns and turn pattern combinations while focusing on the correct connection, tension and movement of Bachata dancing. Learn body isolation exercises and drills to help make this dance look smooth and sexy.

Prerequisite: Completed Bachata Level 1 at Steps Dance Studio and/or been assessed for entry in this level.

Recommended time to learn the Bachata Level 2 curriculum: 4 months. Your instructor will assess your suitability for entering Bachata Level 3.

Bachata Level 3

Learn more intricate and complex Bachata turn pattern combinations. Learn how to execute syncopated Dominican style footwork. Learn body isolation exercises and drills to help you to incorporate the sensuous Bachata body movement needed to make this dance look effortless. 

Prerequisite: Completed Bachata Level 2 at Steps Dance Studio and/or been assessed for entry in this level.

Recommended time to learn the Bachata Level 3 curriculum: 6 months. Your instructor will assess your suitability for entering Bachata Level 4/5.

Bachata Level 4/5

Time to spice it up! Learn more intricate and sexy Bachata turn patterns. Add syncopated Dominican style footwork into your partner dancing. Learn how to incorporate the sensuous Bachata body movement needed to make this dance look effortless. Refine your leading & following technique in order to build a connection with each dance partner.

Prerequisite: Completed Bachata Level 3 at Steps Dance Studio and/or been assessed for entry in this level.

Recommended time to learn the Bachata Level 4/5 curriculum: Endless! We teach new turn patterns and variations every week!

 

Latin Hustle Foundations Workshop (Level 1)

This 2 part, 8 week workshop will introduce both new dancers and salsa dancers alike to the basic Hustle step, the syncopated timing used in Hustle and common Hustle turns. Start learning hustle technique and how to lead and follow well in this fun and energetic dance.

Prerequisite: None

Recommended time to learn the Latin Hustle Level 1 curriculum: 6-10 weeks. Steps Members can repeat the Foundations workshop for free. Your instructor will assess your suitability for entering Latin Hustle Level 2.

Latin Hustle Level 2

Have you taken our Latin Hustle Level 1 course already or done a few Hustle workshops in the past and want to add more variety to your dancing repertoire? Here is your opportunity to learn more Hustle turns, New York walks, Las Vegas and more! Improve your hustle technique while learning turn patterns to get you started on the dancefloor. Be ready to dance to any Top 40, House or Disco song!

Prerequisite: Completed Latin Hustle Foundations at Steps Dance Studio and/or been assessed for entry in this level.  For Salsa dancers level 2-5.

Recommended time to learn the Latin Hustle Level 2 curriculum: 4-6 months. Your instructor will assess your suitability for entering Latin Hustle Level 3.

Latin Hustle Level 3

Hone your hustle skills and take it to the next level with traveling turns, longer turn pattern combinations, fancy Diva Walks, grapevines, Diamonds, hustle arm styling, Hustle based technique and more!

Prerequisite: Completed Latin Hustle Level 2 at Steps Dance Studio and/or been assessed for entry in this level.

Recommended time to learn the Latin Hustle Level 3 curriculum: 3-4 months . Your instructor will assess your suitability for entering Latin Hustle Level 4.

 

Latin Hustle Level 4/5

Some people think they can learn how to dance hustle in a week or two but just like with Salsa, there is an endless variety of turn patterns and styling to add in Hustle. This is our most advanced Hustle class and is geared to the person who has been dancing Hustle for at least 6-12 months or has an advanced West Coast Swing background.  Learn new intricate turn patterns every week that include multiple spins, syncopations and 2 ½ turns. Incorporate sexy styling to make your Hustle dancing look like Hustle (ie not just a replica of your Salsa dancing!). Transform slotted moves into traveling moves and take familiar Salsa moves and transfer them into Hustle, an easy way to increase your Hustle social dancing repertoire!

Prerequisite: Completed Latin Hustle Level 3 at Steps Dance Studio and/or been assessed for entry in this level.

Recommended time to learn the entire Latin Hustle Level 4/5 curriculum: Endless!  We teach new turn patterns and variations every week!

Kids Latin Dance Classes, 4 - 7 years old & 8-12 years old

The Kids' Latin Dance class will place an emphasis on movement, musicality, coordination and fun.  The children will learn the basics of Merengue (or Salsa or Cha Cha, depending on the term) along with a short choreographed dance routine they will perform for the parents at the end of the session.  

Steps Dance Studio is dedicated to teaching children the art of Latin dancing in a fun and caring environment.  Our trained and experienced instructors strive to enhance students' self-esteem, promote physical fitness, discipline and a sense of accomplishment while encouraging a feeling of team spirit and a greater awareness and appreciation of other cultures through studying dance.  

Prerequisite: None, for boys and girls.

 


Specialty Classes

Casino Basics

In this class students will learn Casino Rueda fundamentals and how to execute some of the basic moves in Casino de Rueda. This class will prepare students for the Casino level 2 class on Sundays. This currently replaces our Casino Foundations workshop.  Take one class or try it every week until you feel comfortable and teacher feels you are ready for Casino Level 2.

Open to students in levels 2 – 5.

Max 4 followers and 4 leaders each week.  Sign up & reserve your spot in advance at the front desk.

Performance Class

Learn an entire choreographed routine and then perform it at a studio party and other nightclubs or events in Toronto. Performance classes are taught throughout the year in Salsa, Bachata and Latin Hustle. A performance class will help to improve your memory of turn patterns and shines, enhance your styling, improve your timing and musicality and learn dips and tricks. Unleash your inner performer, increase your confidence on the dancefloor, meet new people and have fun!

Role Neutral Salsa Classes

Each student decides if they want to learn to lead or to follow.
These classes are LGBTQ+ friendly.  
These classes are also great for higher level students who want to learn the opposite role than what they normally dance.  
Everyone will be rotating partners throughout the class.  

Foundation Workshops

4 week intensive for students new to Hustle, Casino Rueda, Cha Cha or Salsa on 2.  Once per week for 4 weeks.  2 different Foundation workshops offered each month and they will be repeated throughout the year.  Students must start on first day.  Not included in membership, members get 50% discount and can repeat the Foundation Workshop for free.  10-Class cards may be used for the foundation classes. 

Move & Groove

Learning lots of moves is great, but being able to move your body and dance to the music is what will take your dancing to the next level!  This half hour class is designed to get your body moving and feeling the music.  Over 30 minutes we will learn simple dance drills from all genres from hip hop to bhangra.  This class is also a great warm up for the rest of the night. Open to all levels.

Cha Cha/Salsa on 2 Challenge

Intermediate/Advanced level shines & turn patterns.  For students in levels 3-5.  Must have experience in Cha Cha and/or on 2 or have taken the Cha Cha & Salsa on 2 Foundations Workshops or been assessed by the instructor for entry into this class.

Cuban Movement 

Learn Cuban body movement, footwork & drills.  Add flavour & style to your dancing and learn how to do body isolations. 

For Salsa students in Levels 2 - 5 

Casino Rueda 2/3

A Cuban form of Salsa, often described as "Salsa in a Circle".  Combine new turn patterns while exchanging partners throughout the song with moves called out by the caller.  Each month new Casino calls/steps will be taught so we ask students to begin on the first Sunday of the month for this class.   
For Salsa students in Levels 3-5.

Prerequisite: Minimum Casino Foundations Workshop or 1-2 months of Casino Rueda experience.

Stretch, Spin & Style 

Want to improve your flexibility and your turns? Every week we will work on improving your range of motion with safe stretching techniques. We will also work on improving your centre of balance so you can start spinning like a top! We finish off each class with a short, fun and funky dance combination, using your turns and flexibility. Watch yourself improve every week! Open to all levels male and female. Please wear clothes that allow you to move freely without restriction, no jeans.
Open to all levels. 

Sexy Jazz 

Join us every week to learn some new moves to take to the dance floor.  Sexy jazz for all levels is a fun and flirty class, dancing like some of today's hit music videos, or drawing inspiration from Broadway and cabaret.  Learn to strut your stuff, improve your coordination and dance with confidence.
All levels welcome. 

West Coast Swing

West Coast Swing is a foundation dance and a great place for beginners to start and is incredibly practical: you can dance it to almost any music: Top 40, Blues, Hip Hop, R & B, Big Band, Jazz, Country.  What separates WCS from other partner dances is that it is famous for giving women much more freedom than other dances and is incredibly improvisational.  

West Coast Swing Level 1 requires no experience.  You will learn all the foundation steps for this dance as well as the principles of connection, leading and following. This class teaches only 100% leadable moves.  

West Coast Swing Level 2 requires completion of WCS Level 1 or assessment.  This class teaches only 100% readable moves.  In Level 2, you will learn all the basic whips (whip, inside whip, outside whip with and without spins) as well as dancing to music (hitting breaks, playing and syncopating.
 

Kizomba

Kizomba is a slow rhythmical and sensual partner dance from the African country of Angola.  This dance is all about connecting the mind, body and soul: moving as one. Immensely popular in most Lusophone countries (Angola, Cape Verde, Gunea Bissau) and currently is the hottest thing to hit the dance scene all around the world.  

Kizomba Level 1 requires no experience.  You will learn the foundation steps (passadas) for this dance as well as the principles of connection, leading and following.  This class teaches only 100% leadable moves. Open to all levels. 

Kizomba Level 2 requires Kizomba Level 1 or assessment. This class teaches only 100% leadable moves.  In Level 2 you will learn contra-tempo steps, various salidas (exits) and musicality (change of speed). 

Ladies' Styling Part A

Geared to students in levels 2 & 3 or anyone new to ladies' styling.

Learn the basic elements of ladies' styling - simple things you can add from head to toe that will improve the look of your dancing. Learn how to add simple styling elements to both your shines and your partnerwork to make you look better and feel better on the dancefloor. Improve your posture, get fit and have fun in a confidence-building, women-only class.

Prerequisite: Completed Salsa Level 1 at Steps Dance Studio and/or has been assessed for entry in this class.

Ladies' Styling Part B

Geared to students in levels 4 & 5.

Learn the tricks of the trade to add elegance, style and sexiness to your dancing. Learn body isolation exercises to help you move more freely and learn how to incorporate body and hip movements into your solo shines and partnerwork. Add arm, hand, hip and leg styling to your dancing, without interfering with your partner. Improve the way you look and feel on the dancefloor in a confidence-building, women only environment.

Prerequisite: Completed Salsa Level 3 at Steps Dance Studio and/or has been assessed for entry in this class.
