Six Degrees Salsa Competition

1st Annual Six Degrees Salsa Competition

The competition, which begins on February 16th, is being organized by Jennifer Aucoin, in association with Six Degrees Nightclub.  Jennifer is the founder of Steps Dance Studio, the organizer of the annual Canada Salsa Congress and was the organizer of the original Berlin (now called Six Degrees) Salsa Competition from 1998-2003.

Jennifer brings her organizational expertise and her years of experience as a professional dancer, instructor, choreographer, adjudicator and event organizer to help make this one of the most prestigious salsa competitions in Canada.

The Six Degrees Salsa Competition features over $20,000 in prizes, including $6000 first place for the professional division - the largest prize ever given out in Canada - and trips to worldwide Salsa events for other contest winners in both the professional and the amateur division.

Preliminaries for both the amateur and professional divisions will take place Tuesday, February 16, 23 and March 2 & 9.

A last minute preliminary round for out-of-town couples will be held on the same night as the semi-finals for that division.

Amateur division Semi-Finals (and last minute qualifier for out of town Amateur competitors) will be on Tues. March 16.

The Semi-Finals for Professionals (and last minute qualifier for out of town Professional competitors) will take place on Tues. March 23rd.

Finals for both categories will be held on Tuesday, March 30.

Amateur
You are in the amateur category if:

·        Neither competitor has performed for money

·        Neither competitor has ever taught salsa

·        Neither is or has been a member of a salsa dance company that paid them to perform

Professional
You are in the professional category if:

·        One, or both of you, has performed for payment

·        One, or both of you, has taught a class or assisted a salsa instructor and been paid.

·        One, or both of you, is or has been a member of a salsa dance company that paid you to perform.

Please note that both the preliminaries and the semi-finals round will consist of dancing improvisationally (ie. freestyle) to a song the dj plays rather than doing a choreographed routine.  This is to show the judges and the audience that the competitors are able to dance socially and improvise and dance musically.  The finals will be a choreographed routine between 1:45 and 2:00 minutes to any Salsa song of your choice.  This is more of an anything goes contest - meaning that tricks and lifts and dips are allowed (although not mandatory).  We will be using a scoring system similar to that of the World Salsa Championships.

Full rules and contest details are posted at www.sixdegreesvenue.com.
